ADULT AUTISM ASSESSMENT

We offer specialist adult autism assessments in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas. At The Lotus Psychology Practice we comply with NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) guidelines and DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. This ensures that all assessments of Autism include a multi-disciplinary team of Clinical Psychologists, Occupational Therapists or Speech and Language Therapists with specialism in neurodevelopmental assessment. We use gold standard, internationally recognised assessment tools. Our approach goes beyond diagnosis, we focuses on understanding strengths, challenges, and individual support needs.

We are able to offer a combined Autism and ADHD assessment.

Our Evidence-Based Assessment

What to Expect from our Autism Assessment

STEP 1: Standardised Measures

An assessment will involve completing standardised and validated pre-assessment questionnaires

STEP 3: Developmental History

A clinician will take a detailed developmental history, which can be with a parent/carer or someone who knew you well when you were a child. If this is not possible, we will complete a developmental history with you directly, and/or speak with a friend, or relative.

STEP 2: Assessment Appointment

A clinician will meet directly with you for an in-depth observational assessment, using a standardised tool (ADOS-2), which will involve some activities and some questions about friendships and feelings.

STEP 5: Report & Feedback

After the assessment you will be offered a feedback session to discuss the findings and answer any questions you may have. You will be provided with a detailed report with individualised recommendations and resources. This will include signposting to services and information sources.

STEP 4: Medical History Review

A clinician will request any previous assessments, reports or information from prior clinicians. This may be previously psychiatric, neurological or physical health reports. The clinician will discuss what reports may be useful with you to ensure we have the information needed to guide the assessment.

Alongside assessments, we offer psychological support, which may include:

  • Psychoeducation and formulation to supporting identity and self-understanding

  • Support with emotional regulation and anxiety

  • Exploring sensory needs and adaptations

  • Evidence-based intervention for co-occurring mental health difficulties, adapted for neurodiversity

  • Reducing burnout and overwhelm

  • Guidance for families, schools, or workplaces

We do not aim to change autistic traits, but to support individuals in navigating environments in a way that is sustainable and authentic.
