THERAPY FOR HEALTH ANXIETY IN BERKHAMSTED

Living with health anxiety can feel exhausting, particularly when normal bodily sensations become a source of constant worry. Many people find themselves caught in cycles of fear, checking, and reassurance seeking, which only provides temporary relief. We offer a calm, structured approach to help you understand these experiences and reduce their impact on daily life. For many people, health anxiety can feel both mentally exhausting and physically overwhelming.

Understanding Health Anxiety

Health anxiety involves persistent worry about health, often centred on fears of having or developing a serious illness. While it is natural to feel concerned about physical symptoms from time to time, health anxiety occurs when these concerns become frequent, distressing, and difficult to manage. While it is normal to notice and reflect on bodily sensations, health anxiety occurs when these experiences become misinterpreted as signs of serious medical problems, leading to ongoing distress. Individuals may become highly focused on bodily sensations such as heart rate, pain, dizziness, or fatigue, and may repeatedly seek reassurance or check symptoms in an attempt to feel certain about their health. However, reassurance is often short-lived, and worry tends to return.

Health Anxiety in the Context of Medical Conditions

Health anxiety can occur both in the absence of medical conditions and alongside diagnosed physical or neurological health conditions. For individuals with existing health conditions, anxiety may focus on:

  • Fear that symptoms indicate deterioration or progression

  • Heightened monitoring of bodily changes

  • Difficulty distinguishing between expected symptoms and signs of worsening health

  • Increased reliance on reassurance from medical professionals or tests

In these contexts, therapy does not dismiss genuine health concerns. Instead, it helps individuals develop a more balanced and flexible relationship with uncertainty, bodily awareness, and medical information.

How Can Therapy Help Health Anxiety?

Psychological therapy for health anxiety focuses on breaking the cycle between bodily sensations, catastrophic interpretation, and reassurance-seeking behaviours. In therapy, we work on:

  • Understanding how attention becomes focused on the body

  • Identifying patterns of misinterpretation of physical sensations

  • Reducing checking behaviours and reassurance seeking

  • Developing tolerance of uncertainty about health

  • Rebuilding trust in bodily experiences

  • Reducing the cycle of short-term relief followed by renewed worry

At The Lotus Psychology Practice, all of our Psychologists are trained across multiple therapeutic modalities, and the approaches are often integrated based on an individuals unique needs. All therapeutic interventions are informed by scientific research and are and in line with National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines. The most effective treatments for health anxiety include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT). We are able to offer longer-term psychotherapy for inidivduals who may benefit from understanding and processing early life experiences that contribute to current difficulties.

Health Anxiety in Children & Young People

In children and adolescents, health anxiety may present differently and is often expressed through behaviour or reassurance-seeking patterns.

Common presentations include:

  • Frequent questions about illness or safety

  • Repeated reassurance seeking from parents or caregivers

  • School avoidance due to physical complaints (stomach aches, headaches)

  • Increased sensitivity to bodily sensations

  • Worry about family members’ health

  • Separation difficulties

  • Sleep disruption

Children may struggle to differentiate between normal bodily sensations and signs of illness, particularly during periods of stress or change. A key part of treatment involves supporting both the young person and their family to understand how anxiety influences interpretation of physical sensations and how reassurance patterns can unintentionally maintain anxiety over time.

When to Seek Support

It may be helpful to seek psychological support if:

  • Worry about health feels persistent or difficult to control

  • You frequently check your body or search for symptoms

  • Reassurance provides only temporary relief

  • Health anxiety is affecting daily functioning, work, or relationships

  • You feel stuck in cycles of fear and uncertainty about your health

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, you may benefit from psychological therapy. You can contact us for an initial consultation with one of our Psychologists. You do not need a diagnosis or referral to begin therapy.
